Legumes-Pulses A Key Staple Food Resource
One of the greatest food resources are legumes or pulses because they are both a seed and a direct food resource. Even though, like all seeds, they have an expiration date. However, they are still a food resource for many years in fact. Almost all dried beans or peas can both be eaten of planted and grown and like seeds, they are an exponential resource. For example, back in 2016 someone gave us a 32oz Mason jar filled with dried Fava Beans, in 2022 our total harvest was 8 gallons. Here is a little Math…
- Plant 10 Fava Beans, 1 plant grows (generally it is more like 7-8 plants), 30 beans come from 1 plant.
- Plant 30 Fava Beans, 3 plants grow, 90 beans come from 3 plants.
- Plant 90 Fava Beans, 9 plants grow, 270 beans come from 9 plants.
So in just 3 years we went from 10 beans to 270 beans-seeds and as stated above 10% germination success is ludicrously low. By the way, Fava’s are a free-standing “pole bean” so can be planted quite densely and the leaves are also edible.
